As the year 2013 winds down and the pros on the WTA begin to prep for the 2014 season, 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist and Georgia native Melanie Oudin is putting in just one hour of running per day. Her peers, on the other hand, are averaging at least six hours a day of court time and fitness work. Oudin is recovering from a muscle-damaging condition that she says caused her arms to swell ''like balloons,'' and is currently under doctor's orders to severely limit her activity and training.

She said she was diagnosed two weeks ago with rhabdomyolysis, which may be caused by intense exertion and can lead to kidney damage. Oudin wants other athletes to know about what happened to her so ''they'll be really careful about overtraining.''

Oudin feels the medical issue began approximately two-and-a-half weeks ago during an intense weight training session. Over the next couple of days, she felt her arms ''were swollen and looked like balloons,'' and she couldn't straighten them.

Oudin is unsure of when she will return to the courts and may not be ready for the 2014 Australian Open in January.
