Smithtown West Trips Up West Islip To Advance

The Smithtown West Bulls went on the road in a Suffolk County first-round playoff matchup on Tuesday afternoon, and came away with a 5-2 win over the West Islip to advance.

The Bulls were led by its top singles player Nick Gajda, who came back from a set down to beat Marty Racanelli 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 to anchor the victory. The 21st seed Smithtown West are the lowest seed left in the tournament, despite having an 11-1 record on the season.

The Bulls’ only loss of the year came against undefeated Half Hollow Hills East. It will try and continue its season in the second-round on the road against fifth-seed Bay Shore.

The highest seed to play a first round match on Tuesday was the ninth-seed squad from Islip, who advanced with a 6-1 triumph over Southold. Matt Southard led the way with a comeback win at first singles, fighting back from a set down to beat Aiden Walker 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Islip moves on to face eighth-seeded Sachem on Wednesday.

In the tightest match of Tuesday’s playoff contests, Harborfields snuck past Ross School 4-3 behind Cameron Levhchuck. The eighth-grader won the clinching match at fourth singles, beating Adam Jennetti 6-3, 6-2 to seal the Harborfields victory.

The Tornadoes will travel to fourth-seed Ward Melville on Wednesday.

18th seed Mattituck defeated 15th seed Bayport-Blue Point 6-1 to set up a matchup with second-seed Commack, and 17th seed Connetquot defeated 16th seed Sayville 4-3 to move into a match against top seed Half Hollow Hills East.  

Miller Place defeated Floyd 5-2, and will take on defending county champions Half Hollow Hills West next. Patchogue-Medford moved past Deer Park 6-1 to set up a contest with East Hampton, and Westhampton slipped past Longwood 6-1. The Hurricanes will travel to play seventh-seed Huntington on Wednesday.
