Eating right doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, it's much easier than you think.

As a registered dietitian, nutritionist and health coach, I help people improve their nutrition to adopt new and healthy ways of eating that work for them.

What is eating right and how to start?
First, find out what fits your personal lifestyle, risk factors, medical needs, food preferences, health and weight goals. There is no one way to eat right … there are many eating patterns that promote health and prevent disease.

Here are my three tips to begin creating a healthier eating style that is right for you:

1. Turn your focus toward eating more whole fresh foods and eliminate highly processed foods and ultra-processed foods. Learn to enjoy nutrient-rich foods and include them in meals and snacks. Think fresh fruit, nuts, low-fat cheeses, yogurt, raw vegetables and whole grains.

2. Find healthier foods that you enjoy and experiment with new foods. Swap them for those less-than-good choices—you know what they are.

3. Take the time to build variety into your diet by planning meals. Without a solid plan, we fall back on what we are used to doing and that gets us into a nutrition rut.

Our bodies need more than 23 nutrients for good health, so getting more variety from all of the food groups will increase your chance of getting more nutrients for better health … so choose wisely!

A good rule of thumb is to pile half of your plate with fruits and veggies, one quarter with high-fiber whole grain foods, and the last quarter with a lean protein.

There are many benefits to finding a nutrition plan that works well for you. Finding nutrition that supports your health, helps you manage your weight and prevents disease is one of the best things you can do to live a happier and healthier life.
