Commack Begins Season With Win Over Huntington

The boys’ high school tennis season in Suffolk County got underway this week and teams from across the county took advantage of the nice weather on Tuesday.

In League 1, the Commack Cougars won its season opener with a 6-1 victory over Huntington in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals. Seventh-grader Matt Strogach picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles for his first career varsity victory to lead the way for Commack.

Islip, who was a quarterfinalist last year, edged East Islip 4-3 in a League III showdown. The match came down to the third doubles flight, and Hunter Giordano and Kenny Ortega outlasted Nick Spaleia and Brandon Postilio 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to clinch the win.

There are two matches scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, as Brentwood is slated to travel to Babylon while Kings Park will host Whitman.
