World number one and defending champion Andy Murray was ousted from the Aegon Championships on Tuesday, as Australia’s Jordan Thompson pulled off the stunning 7-6(4), 6-2 upset.

Thompson was not even in the main draw when the tournament began. He lost in the second round of qualifying to Jeremy Chardy of France, but found his way into the tournament after Great Britain’s Aljaz Bedene was forced to withdraw.

He made the most of his chance, saving all three break points to upend Murray.

Thompson moves on to play American Sam Querrey, who won his opening round match against British wild card Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-4.

Earlier in the day, second-seed and French Open finalist Stan Wawrinka saw his run at the Aegon Championships come to an end, as Spain’s Feliciano Lopez edged the Swiss 7-6(4), 7-5.

“I knew that I was going to have another chance here this week at Queen’s. It’s a tournament that I love. Obviously it was not the best draw to play Stan, but I was confident after winning a lot of matches in Stuttgart that I could do well today,” said Lopez. “So I feel very pleased with the way I played, it’s very similar to the way I was playing last week.”

Lopez will play Chardy next.

Rounding out the day of upsets was Australia’s Thanassi Kokkinakis, who knocked off Milos Raonic 7-6(5), 7-6(8).

“It’s huge. Best win of my career, and to do it so soon after coming back on [after] such a long layoff is a huge confidence booster for me,” he said afterwards. “My serve helped me in it, and then I won the big points when it mattered.”

Over in Mallorca, Spain, American CiCi Bellis nailed down the first tour-level grass-court win in her first try, upsetting fourth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-3, 7-5.

Americans Varvara Lepchenko and Shelby Rogers were also first-round winners in Mallorca on Tuesday.
