The Mixed-Doubles League continues match play with League playoffs beginning in May. The winning Long Island teams will advance to the Section Championship in Schenectady, N.Y. the weekend of May 31-June 2.

Westhampton Beach Tennis will be again offering partial and full scholarships to both adults and juniors at its tennis academy. These scholarships are for beginning tennis players who have made contributions to their community. The scholarships are in the names of two of owner Peter Kaplan's roommates at Cornell University.

Over the holiday season, Rockville Racquet Club held their 2012 Men's Holiday Tournament. There was both singles and doubles competition for two levels of play, A+B. Tournament Director Kevin Gray did a great job making sure everything ran smoothly and that everyone had a great time. It was a wonderful two weeks of tennis at Rockville Racquet.

Long Beach Tennis Center, who was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, is very close to being back in business. One bubble is up and within the next two weeks, LBTC will be fully open for business.

Ian Shapiro's Syosset Sportime team won the Long Island Region for Men’s 3.5, 4.0. & 4.5 Tri-Level this weekend 2-1 over the Klee/Nassau Indoor team. The team went undefeated for the season, winning the LI championship for the second time in three years. They will now be headed to Schenectady Jan. 19-20 for the Eastern Championships.

Congratulations to the Women’s 3.0 Senior Team from Point Set, captained by Marilyn Shimon, and the Women’s 3.5 Senior Team from Carefree Racquet, captained by Bonnie Kolenberg, for winning at Sectionals and advancing to the Nationals! A job well done! Also advancing to Nationals is the Super Senior 9.0 Men’s Team from Jericho-Westbury, captained by Ed Wolfarth.

For the second consecutive year, the United States has won seven cups at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super-Seniors World Team Championships. The 2012 event, the 32nd edition of the championships, was held in Umag, Croatia, and consisted of 186 teams from 35 countries competing in 10 age categories from 60 and over to 80 and over.

I have been coordinating the USTA Leagues on Long Island for 26 years. When I started, there were about 400 in the league and this number has grown to over 4,000 players. The USTA Eastern Long Island Region is proud to congratulate several local USTA League teams who achieved great things this season. Two Long Island teams, the 3.5 Men’s team from Rockville Racquet, captained by Don Rodgers and the Eastern Athletics 3.5 Women’s team, lead by captain Tricia Livingston, are going to Nationals! Additional teams from Rockville Racquet, Carefree and Sportime Lynbrook won their respective Long Island Championships and went to Sectionals.

I absolutely LOVE playing tennis! My mom was a club tennis champion in Baltimore in the 1930s, and she actually played tennis on the last day of her life at the age of 83. I learned the game at the age of 10 at a summer camp, and I’ve been playing socially ever since.
