Most players will be maintaining their current levels of play, but for those who see their rating change, we are providing information about why you may have moved up or down.

Since its inaugural season in 1979, no team based on the South Shore of Long Island has won the Long Island Men's Tennis League (LIMTL). On Aug. 24, that all changed as Inwood Country Club, captained by Lionel Goldberg and co-captained by Jonathan Klee, defeated Cold Spring Valley 4-1 to take the championship.

As the Mixed-Doubles League is winding down with playoffs about to begin, we are gearing up for the summer Adult, Senior and Super Senior Leagues which began Monday, May 16 with a record 286 teams this year.

As the snow melts and the weather gets warmer, outdoor tennis makes its way back to Long Island. From the schools, to the parks, to the clubs, nothing can make you feel more like a beginner than hitting that first ball outside in a swirling wind after playing indoors all winter. Whereas the USTA Adult Leagues will mainly continue their indoor play, a well-established “niche” of outdoor leagues will begin.

The men’s playoffs are first place Sportime Syosset, captained by Ian Shapiro, who will be playing the second place team from Rockville Racquet, captained by Bruce Lindenman. Good luck to both teams!

Tennis Hall of Famer, native New Yorker and former world number one John McEnroe has announced that he will open and direct the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, with its inaugural, full-year programs commencing just after the 2010 U.S. Open. The McEnroe Academy will be housed at the new $18 million Sportime at Randall’s Island Tennis Center in New York City. Sportime, owner of 13 tennis and fitness clubs throughout New York State, will operate the club and will partner with McEnroe in the operation of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.

Chris Evert helped the USTA honor tennis moms by giving a lesson to kids from the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program on top of the Empire State Building on May 13. As part of the 13th annual National Tennis Month, the USTA is honoring tennis moms while conducting festivities nationwide to foster tennis participation.

The 2010 USTA Adult League Summer Season kicked off Thursday night, May 6 with the USTA Captains Meeting at Crest Hollow Country Club. There were 267 men's and women's captains from the Eastern/Long Island Region on hand to receive their schedules for the upcoming season, as well as learn of any rule changes since the 2009 season.
