Day Two of the 2012 Australian Open finished with all the seeds on both the men's and women's sides of the draw advancing with the exception of hometown favorite Samantha Stosur, the number six-ranked and 2011 U.S. Open Champion. Stosur was ousted in straight sets on Tuesday, 7-6 (2), 6-3, to the 59th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania.

Ana Ivanovic has won the WTA Tournament of Champions with a straight set win over Anabel Medina-Garigues 6-3, 6-0. She gained speed early and sweeped through the second set to take the title. "I feel great. Very unexpected, actually. I think I played an impeccable match today. Really I didn't do much wrong," said Ivanovic.

Serena Williams will open her 2012 season for the first time at the Brisbane International tournament, a warmup for the Australian Open. Both U.S. Open finalists will be in the field for the event that begins Jan. 1, as Samantha Stosur, who was already confirmed for the tournament, defeated Williams 6-2, 6-3 in September at the Open to earn her first Grand Slam title.

The Round of 16 has taken shape, and the second week of action at the 2011 U.S. Open gets underway Monday, Sept. 5 with a full slate of top-seeded stars still in contention. Jelena Jankovic rolled to a surprisingly easy 6-0, 6-1 win Thursday over Venus Williams in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open. Williams struggled with her serve throughout the match and could never really get going. Unforced errors were ultimately her downfall.

Serena Williams, the Billie Jean King Cup’s defending champion, has withdrawn from the upcoming BNP Paribas Showdown, scheduled for Monday, March 1, 2010 at Madison Square Garden. Williams, who qualified for the Showdown based on her 2009 victories at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, has withdrawn due to a leg injury sustained during her recent run to the Australian Open Championships. This injury has also forced Williams out of WTA events in Paris and Dubai.
