On June 21, the 2012 U.S. Open Ballperson Tryouts were held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. More than 400 people were on hand to show off their skills in running, throwing and catching for a shot at one of the 80 available spots.

The 12th Annual Jana Hunsaker Memorial Wheelchair Tennis Tournament was held from June 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Jana Hunsaker was the director of the wheelchair tennis program at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park center until her death in 2000.

Tickets to the 2012 U.S. Open to the general public are now available, as the event is set to be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Monday, Aug. 27-Sunday, Sept. 9. Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, presented by Hess, a full-day tennis and music festival for children and families, will kick off the U.S. Open for the 17th consecutive year and will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25.

On Saturday, Russian Maria Sharapova completed her career Grand Slam with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Italy's Sara Errani. Sharapova won in Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008, and four years later, the 2012 French Open women's singles title.

Of the eight singles matches to played this morning, five featured Long Island players, three from Nassau and two from Suffolk.

The USTA has announced that it will host its annual open casting call on Tuesday, June 19 at Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater in New York City to select children to perform at the 2012 U.S. Open, set for Aug. 27-Sept. 9. Winners will perform “America the Beautiful” live at Arthur Ashe Stadium during night sessions of this year’s U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
