I’m asked many times how power is achieved in tennis shots. We see on TV many players on tour with amazing power. While of the world’s best players are bigger, faster and stronger than in years past, and technology has improved the racquets, the answer to generating power is still in the timing of two areas during the contact of the shot, weight and snap.

The USTA has announced that the 2012 U.S. Open, driven by two of the most compelling singles finals in the tournament’s 131 years, was one of the most successful years in the tournament’s history. Total attendance topped 700,000 for the fifth time, finishing at 710,803.

HD Tennis, a USTA Eastern Long Island Region member organization, has announced its First Annual DOTS Invitational, a new tennis program for kids that is designed to be a first introduction to match play in a less competitive format. The inaugural event has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, N.Y. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and match play at 11:00 a.m.
