Syosset High School's Hannah Camhi capped off an epic senior season with a hard-fought, three-set victory over fellow Long Islander Morgan Hermann of Garden City, 6-2,5-7, 6-2 in the 2011 NYSPHSAA Girls High School Tennis Championships played yesterday in Manlius, N.Y. This was just the first time since 2006 that both girls finalists were Long Islanders.

For the third time in the last seven years, the girls tennis team of Half Hollow Hills East (HHHE) have been crowned Suffolk County Champions. In the Suffolk finals, the top seed from HHHE went up against the Cinderella story of the playoffs, 19th-ranked Northport High School.

As the Syosset and Garden City Girls’ High School Varsity Tennis teams took to the courts on Friday in Cold Spring Harbor with the Nassau County title on the line, the opponent was far from the forefront of the players’ minds.

In last year’s Long Island Girl’s Tennis County Championship, Syosset High School defeated Half Hollow Hills West 5-2 to win the 2009 Long Island Championship. This year, a majority of the Syosset High School girl’s roster returns and they look to again raise the championship.

This past weekend, the best boys high school players in Nassau County came together at Oceanside High School for the Individual Championships. They were battling for County supremacy, as well as a trip to the State Championships (beginning June 3). The weather cooperated this past weekend, allowing for some great tennis, both in singles and doubles matches.

2009 season recap Last year, Cold Spring Harbor was crowned winners of the 2009 Nassau County Championship, while in Suffolk, Commack High School was the winner of the 2009 Suffolk County Championship. Cold Spring Harbor went on to defeat Commack 5-2 in the Long Island Championship to capture the overall Boys 2009 Long Island Tennis Championship. Cold Spring Harbor will have many of their players return from 2009 and are aiming to repeat in 2010.
