German standout Anna-Lena Groenefeld, a former top-15 singles player currently ranked at 19th in the world in doubles, has been selected by the NY Sportimes in the Mylan WTT Roster Draft in Indian Wells, Calif. Groenefeld, who competed for the Orange County Breakers in 2012, will be joined by her doubles partner, Kveta Peschke, formerly number one in doubles and now ranked 17th.

The USTA Eastern Long Island Region has announced that Susan Alvy, recently retired manager at Rockville Racquet Club, will receive the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award at the Region’s 23rd Annual Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 1 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. honoring local tennis champions.

In opening round men's singles action at the 2013 Sony Open in Miami, it was wild card James Blake who defeated his fellow countryman, Ryan Harrison, 6-2, 6-2. Blake won 24 of his 27 first serve points and broke Harrison twice while improving his head-to-head series with Harrison to a perfect 3-0 mark.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic was tested in the second round at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open second-round match, winning 10 of the first 11 games, before Fabio Fognini staged a big comeback, forcing a third set before Djokovic sealed the win 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. Djokovic is undefeated to date in 2013, with a 14-0 record with victories at the Australian Open and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

The USTA has announced that USTA Player Development is expanding its training program at the National Training Center-East at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., hiring Erik Kortland as National Coach, Junior Development, to coach players in a new “Feeder Program” for boys and girls ages nine through 13.

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopeful Tomas Berdych defeated Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp 6-1, 6-4 in opening round action at the 2012 If Stockholm Open. The second-seeded Czech, who also recorded a straight-sets win over Zopp in the second round of the U.S. Open, broke serve three times en route to win over Zopp.
