Esther Vergeer, 30, of the Netherlands, won her 429th consecutive singles match today at the U.S. Open, defeating fellow Netherlands native Aniek Van Koot, 6-2, 6-1. Vergeer has become one of the most successful wheelchair tennis players in history, first hitting world No. 1 in 1999.

The USTA has announced the field for the 2011 U.S. Open Wheelchair Competition. The event, in its sixth year, will be held Sept. 8-11, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

The USTA has announced a series of expanded fan enhancements and programming for the 2010 U.S. Open. This year’s Opening Night ceremony will celebrate those who “Dream, Succeed and Inspire,” with appearances by Martina Navratilova, James Blake and other notable celebrities, as well as a special performance by Gloria Estefan.
