The 2012 French Open, the year’s second Grand Slam event, will take place May 27-June 10 at the famed clay courts of Roland Garros. The event was first played in 1891 as a French national tournament on grass. The surface would be changed to red clay in 1912.

Italy's Francesca Schiavone, 2012 French Open winner, has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. due to a virus that has plagued the event. Schiavone was forced to withdraw from her match with Czech Lucie Safarova, trailing 2-6.

Australia's Sam Stosur, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, lost to Italy's Francesca Schiavone, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of the Sydney International Tournament. Schiavone has also defeated Stosur at the 2010 French Open final and had little to no trouble once again defeating her early on in this tournament.

The Round of 16 has taken shape, and the second week of action at the 2011 U.S. Open gets underway Monday, Sept. 5 with a full slate of top-seeded stars still in contention. On the women's side of the draw, a marquee matchup in the afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium will see the 28-seed, American Serena Williams, take on the number 16 seed, Serbian Ana Ivanovic.
