Vivian Cheng ended her high school career on a high note yesterday as she went out as the New York State Champion. Cheng who played first singles for Nassau County Champion Syosset High School defeated fellow Nassau County representative and fourth-seeded Nicholle Torres of Great Neck South in the finals.

In 2011, the Girls High School Tennis Season ended on a sour note as Syosset High School defeated Half Hollow Hills East for the Long Island Championship via a coaches forfeit by HHHE over a lineup dispute. While this was deeply concerning on many levels, it shouldn't overshadow what was one of the best seasons on-court by Long Island high school girls in recent memory.

Syosset High School's Hannah Camhi capped off an epic senior season with a hard-fought, three-set victory over fellow Long Islander Morgan Hermann of Garden City, 6-2,5-7, 6-2 in the 2011 NYSPHSAA Girls High School Tennis Championships played yesterday in Manlius, N.Y. This was just the first time since 2006 that both girls finalists were Long Islanders.

The 2011 Nassau County Girls High School Tennis Championship will be held this weekend, Oct. 15-16 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y. The tournament will have both a singles and doubles tournament where the top Nassau County girls players will compete for the title of 2011 champion.

When the USTA announced that the mixed-doubles winner of the U.S. Open National Playoffs would get a wild card into the main draw of the 2011 U.S. Open, I knew I had to at least give it a shot and play in the Eastern Sectional Tournament.

The 2010 New York State High School Girls Tennis Championships took place this past weekend, Nov. 6-8 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y. Girls from both Nassau and Suffolk Counties were on hand, joining forces at the event proudly representing Long Island and leaving a strong impact in the process.

It was a repeat of last year's Long Island Girls High School Tennis final, as the Syosset Girls Varsity Tennis team defeated Half Hollow Hills West by a count of 6-1 on Nov. 2. It was a dominating performance by the Lady Braves, as all four singles, and first and third doubles, won their matches convincingly.

Garden City's Jacqueline Raynor and Syosset's Hannah Camhi have had a long-standing history with each other. The two number one singles players and archrivals have battled it out for conference supremacy and bragging rights in the past. It was all or nothing in the finals of the Girls Nassau County High School Championship as both players put it all on the line for a chance to be crowned 2010 Nassau County Girls High School Champion.

This edition of Long Island Tennis Magazine takes you inside the trip and journey of Hauppauge, N.Y. high school student Jenny Kellner and her recent trip to Tucson, Ariz. for the 2009 Copper Bowl Tennis Tournament. Jennifer is a full-time student at Hauppauge High School. She is enrolled in a number of advanced placement courses and maintains her position on the high honor roll. She has been ranked as high as number one in the Eastern Section and number four nationally in the Girls 16 & Under. Currently, Jennifer is ranked 60th nationally in the 18 & Under age division and continues to advance in the standings. Jennifer hopes to find a college that is challenging both athletically and academically, and is looking forward to studying medicine. At this time, she works ardently to improve and reach her utmost tennis capabilities.
