The United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced that on Jan. 1, 2012 the rules of tennis officially will be changed and require that 10 & Under Tennis tournaments be played utilizing smaller, lighter racquets and lower-bouncing balls on smaller courts. The change was adopted by the USTA in the summer of 2010.

A generation ago, training for athletes was a lot simpler than it is today. We lifted a few weights, did various forms of running for conditioning and even stretched on occasion. Granted, we probably weren't quite as fit as the athletes of today, but somehow we managed to get by.

World TeamTennis is donating hundreds of clothing items for children impacted by the earthquake in Haiti to K.I.D.S. (Kids in Distressed Situations), a charity that focuses on the needs of children and their families. While the immediate call from relief organizations is for funds to support rescue efforts and emergency medical treatment in Haiti, a number of charities such as K.I.D.S. will also provide a “second wave” of support to displaced children and their families.

In 1975 at the age of two, Phil Stevanovic, a construction manager who builds airports in the metropolitan area, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a degenerative genetic disease that affect the lungs and digestive systems. At the time, doctors told him he wouldn’t live past 18 years of age. With the assistance of medication and extensive chest physical therapy, Phil was able to beat the odds. Doctors prescribed lots of exercise as a way to clear the lungs of the thick sticky mucus that is the breeding ground for lung infections and the hallmark of Cystic Fibrosis.
