The sun was finally out on Long Island Thursday as the 2014 Boys High School tennis season heated up. In Conference 1-A action, it was Luke Johnston & Max Mastbaum who led the way for Port Washington in their win over Great Neck South's Landon Phillips & Harrison Dvoor.

High school matches in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties were on the docket Wednesday afternoon as the week's weather finally decided to cooperate. In Suffolk County, it was the Center Moriches Red Devils defeating Eastport South Manor yesterday 5-2 in a League 8 Division IV match at Eastport South Manor.

The Suffolk County Tennis Coaches Association (SCTCA) recently hosted a pre-season HS Coaches workshop at Sportime Kings Park. The Workshop, organized by SCTCA President and Commack Coach Shane Helfner, was conducted by SCTCA Vice President, Center Moriches Coach and USTA Coaching Education and Development Faculty member Joe Arias, and featured gymnasium tennis, and on-courts topics.

The Hampton Bays Baymen Boys Varsity Tennis team managed to overcome many obstacles in winning their first match of the season on Wednesday. Playing without one of their top players against a tough Eastport/South Manor Sharks team was difficult enough, but adding in the frigid temperatures made it that much more difficult.

The 2014 Suffolk County Boys High School Tennis season is underway, and on Tuesday, it was the Center Moriches Red Devils varsity boys tennis team who won its season opener by defeating Riverhead Blue Waves 5-2. The Red Devils prevailed over the Blue Waves in cold and windy conditions as the spring weather continues to elude the area and the threat of another winter storm loomed large.

Looking for his first Nassau County Championship, top-seeded Vihar Shah of Herricks High School was up 6-2, 4-1 against Cold Spring Harbor's Conor Dauer, the second seed, at the 2013 Nassau County boy's tennis finals at Oceanside High School on Saturday when his nerves took over. Dauer was able to break Shah to get within 2-4 and put some pressure on him.

The score was tied at three matches a piece between Conference B-III playoff semifinalists Wantagh High School and Glen Cove High School on Wednesday afternoon at Wantagh High School. It was all up to the third singles match between Wantagh's Jeff Starr and Glen Cove's Jerry Ho to decide the winner.

The Suffolk County Individual Championships were held Tuesday at Smithtown East High School, and the day belonged to Half Hollow Hills East, as a record seven of their players qualified for the State Championships. The 2013 Nassau County Boys Individual Championships were scheduled to begin on Saturday, May 11, but Mother Nature changed those plans as rain caused the postponement of Day One of the tournament. On Sunday morning as Coordinator Barry Kubit squeegeed the courts of Oceanside High School and the sun finally shone through as play was able to get underway.

Yesterday afternoon, the Boys Suffolk League I Individual Championships top seeded Zain Ali of Half Hollow Hills East was crowned the Suffolk Champion as he defeated second-seeded Brandon Stone of Walt Whitman in the finals in three tough sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

The St. Anthony's Friars captured their second Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Boys Tennis Title in three years Monday at Hofstra with a 6-1 win over the Chaminade Flyers. With the win, the Friars won their seventh CHSAA Boys Tennis Championship.
