On Sept. 2, 2010, The City Parks Foundation hosted a clinic in Central Park for 40 of the best eight-12-year-old girls, in the east. Steffi Graf and Billie Jean King were the stars in attendance and they were wonderful, helping the players for over three hours.

The 2010 New York State High School Girls Tennis Championships took place this past weekend, Nov. 6-8 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y. Girls from both Nassau and Suffolk Counties were on hand, joining forces at the event proudly representing Long Island and leaving a strong impact in the process.

It was a repeat of last year's Long Island Girls High School Tennis final, as the Syosset Girls Varsity Tennis team defeated Half Hollow Hills West by a count of 6-1 on Nov. 2. It was a dominating performance by the Lady Braves, as all four singles, and first and third doubles, won their matches convincingly.

The finals of the Girls Suffolk County Tennis Championships pitted Half Hollow Hills West against Half Hollow Hills East. These were the top two seeds, as both teams finished 9-1 in league play (Conference I). They had split their two regular season meetings.

Garden City's Jacqueline Raynor and Syosset's Hannah Camhi have had a long-standing history with each other. The two number one singles players and archrivals have battled it out for conference supremacy and bragging rights in the past. It was all or nothing in the finals of the Girls Nassau County High School Championship as both players put it all on the line for a chance to be crowned 2010 Nassau County Girls High School Champion.

The South Side Cyclones Girls Varsity Tennis Team from Rockville Centre, N.Y. are returning their entire starting lineup this year which is heavily laden with seniors and four-year starters. The last three seasons, South Side has been a playoff team and a contender for the Conference Championship in Conference 2B, compiling a record of 28-10 over that time.

The Saturday morning girls high school tennis showdown between Syosset High School and Port Washington High School, the two schools that have won each of the last three Long Island Championships was a close one the entire way and truly lived up to expectations.

In last year’s Long Island Girl’s Tennis County Championship, Syosset High School defeated Half Hollow Hills West 5-2 to win the 2009 Long Island Championship. This year, a majority of the Syosset High School girl’s roster returns and they look to again raise the championship.

When we last left off with the story of 12-year-old Mia Vecchio in the September/October 2009 edition of Long Island Tennis Magazine, she was preparing herself for tryouts for the Herricks High School varsity tennis team. Going in as a 7th grader, the odds were against her to make the squad, but Mia was not deterred and was feeling “ready for the challenge” and more than ready to “prove herself.”
