The USTA has announced that the 36th season of the USTA Pro Circuit launches this week with two men’s events in Florida and California—the $10,000 clay-court men’s Futures in Plantation, Fla., and the new $15,000 hard-court men’s Futures in Los Angeles. Next week, the women’s season begins with a $25,000 event in Plantation.

Long Beach Tennis Center had their official grand opening on Sunday afternoon after being closed for three and a half months due damage from Hurricane Sandy. It was a special day with free tennis lessons for people of all ages, a host of vendors, and a carnival with prizes.

The USTA Eastern Long Island Region has had a busy start to the fall season, giving 10-and-under lessons to hundreds of kids attending several street fairs around town. The Region brought its 10-and-under courts, balls, racquets and other equipment to the Merrick Fair, Bellmore Family Street Festival and Town of Hempstead Family Festival by the Sea, and introduced participants to the sport of a lifetime.

I have been coordinating the USTA Leagues on Long Island for 26 years. When I started, there were about 400 in the league and this number has grown to over 4,000 players. As another season comes to an end, I was thinking about some of the good experiences I’ve had or heard about from the league over the years.

Long Beach Tennis Center joined with Cure Mommy’s Breast Cancer on Thursday night in a fundraising effort to raise money for those affected by breast cancer. Over 40 people joined the effort and came out to support a great cause. The music was blasting and everyone was having a great time doing drills and playing games.
