And fair enough, it’s undeniable that in Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, we are privileged to be witnessing three of the greatest players of all time doing battle on the biggest stages of all.

Tennis returned to the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday night for the first time in almost 15 years with the inaugural Caesars Tennis Classic. The event featured five of the sport's top past and present stars, including Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, recent retiree Marat Safin and the current number one-ranked American player, Andy Roddick. The hostess for the event was seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams.

I have never been a fan of reading encyclopedias. So it was with some trepidation that I opened Randy Walker’s book On This Day in Tennis History. The thought of reading about things that happened in tennis from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 through the years sounded slightly, but only slightly, more fun than curling up with a set of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
