This past weekend, the United States Davis Cup team had a wide-open opportunity to upend Spain in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Davis Cup, but was unable to do so. Everything was in favor of the U.S. prior to the competition getting underway.

The USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier has announced that world number nine Mardy Fish, number 10 Andy Roddick, and the world’s top-ranked doubles team of Bob & Mike Bryan will represent the United States in the 2011 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Quarterfinal tie against Spain, July 8-10.

Wednesday was a chance for both the men and the women to punch their ticket the semifinals at this year's U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Strong winds at Arthur Ashe Stadium made playing conditions tough, but the top players fought through Day 10 at Flushing Meadows.

Hurricane Earl stayed away for the most part, with only a short rain delay in the early afternoon, and the full card of matches was completed on Friday, Sept. 3, Day Five of the 2010 U.S. Open. Three American men, John Isner, Sam Querrey and Ryan Harrison, took to the court on Day Five of singles action, looking for a trip to the third round. In the end, two advanced, and the other fell just short of moving on.
