On Wednesday, May 9, the USTA Eastern Long Island Region Annual Awards Dinner was held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. There were more than 300 in attendance to honor all of the award recipients for all of their hard work on behalf of the tennis community over the past year.

The 2011 U.S. Open concluded Monday evening with the Men's Singles match between number-one seeded Novak Djokovic from Serbia and the second-seeded Rafael Nadal from Spain. Djokovic took the match in four sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1, and in the process, won his first-ever U.S. Open championship and third Grand Slam event of the year.

As the snow melts and the weather gets warmer, outdoor tennis makes its way back to Long Island. From the schools, to the parks, to the clubs, nothing can make you feel more like a beginner than hitting that first ball outside in a swirling wind after playing indoors all winter. Whereas the USTA Adult Leagues will mainly continue their indoor play, a well-established “niche” of outdoor leagues will begin.

When Oceanside, N.Y. resident Nadia Johnston played beach tennis for the first time, she realized she had an opportunity that most professional athletes rarely get—a second chance. The Australian-born Johnston was a rising tennis star in the late 90s, attaining WTA rankings of 314 for singles and 245 for doubles, and competing in the 2001 Australian Open. Throughout her seven-year run as a touring pro, Johnston’s future looked bright, until a wrist injury in the summer of 2001 changed everything.

The dilemma that faces many tennis families today, after spending nine to 10 years on the junior tennis circuit running from tournament to tournament is, “How do we find the right college for our child?” Ask most young junior tennis players where they want to go to college, and the majority will answer: Stanford, Duke, U Penn or some other top flight university. While those schools usually do have spots to fill on their tennis teams, varying in number from year to year, realistically, they need a player who fits a certain set of criteria. It is that criteria that keeps most junior tennis players from consideration.
