On Wednesday, May 9, the USTA Eastern Long Island Region Annual Awards Dinner was held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. There were more than 300 in attendance to honor all of the award recipients for all of their hard work on behalf of the tennis community over the past year.

The Boys 18 Division began play on Tuesday at the 2012 Easter Bowl, as both the number one and two seeds, Mitchell Krueger of Aledo, Texas and Noah Rubin of Rockville Centre, N.Y., respectively, scored straight-set wins at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The second seeded Rubin was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Nick Wood of Knoxville, Tenn.

A Long Islander came through with one of the biggest upsets of Day One at the 65th Annual Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Fla. Fifteen-year-old Noah Rubin, one of the youngest competitors in the Boys 18s draw who got in as a wild card, stunned the number nine seed, Karim Hossam of Egypt, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The USTA has announced the acceptance lists for the 65th Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, which begins Monday, Dec. 5 at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Fla. The event will be contested on clay for the first time since 1998.

The South Side Cyclones Girls Varsity Tennis Team from Rockville Centre, N.Y. are returning their entire starting lineup this year which is heavily laden with seniors and four-year starters. The last three seasons, South Side has been a playoff team and a contender for the Conference Championship in Conference 2B, compiling a record of 28-10 over that time.

The following is the acceptance speech from Nancy McShea from the recent USAT/Long Island 19th Annual Awards Dinner, held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Nancy was honored by USTA/Long Island with the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award for dedication and service to the Long Island Tennis community. The award is presented in honor of Hy Zausner, who passed away on 1992 and founded the Port Washington Tennis Academy in 1965, a facility that saw players such as John McEnroe and Vitas Gerulaitis pass through its doors. Long Island Tennis Magazine would like to congratulate Nancy and the rest of the award winners on their accomplishments, recognition and dedication to growing the sport of tennis on Long Island.
