With extremely windy conditions on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court Thursday, players on both the men's and women's side of the 2010 U.S. Open fully realized the importance of adjusting their game to the elements. Rafael Nadal moved on to the semifinals with a straight-set victory over Fernando Verdasco in the Night Session.

Five-set encounters and marathon matches ruled the courts on Day Nine at the 2010 U.S. Open. The first of the five-setters saw the end to any hope of an American winning the men's singles title this year, as Stanislav Wawrinka defeated Sam Querrey, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that took 4 hours and 28 minutes.
