The USTA has announced that USTA Player Development is expanding its training program at the National Training Center-East at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., hiring Erik Kortland as National Coach, Junior Development, to coach players in a new “Feeder Program” for boys and girls ages nine through 13.

The USTA and U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez have announced that 2013 Australian Open semifinalist Sloane Stephens will be joined by Varvara Lepchenko, Jamie Hampton, and world number eight doubles player Liezel Huber in representing the United States against Italy in the 2013 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group First Round at 105 Stadium in Rimini, Italy, Feb. 9-10.

Tennis Channel's sixth year of televising the Australian Open, the first major tournament of the annual tennis season, will begin Monday, Jan. 14, at 7:00 p.m. ET. The network plans for more than 30 hours of live match telecasts during the two-week competition again this year, with more than 180 hours of dedicated tournament coverage overall.

As confirmed by the official Web site of the 2013 Australian Open, Spain's Rafael Nadal has put his comeback on hold as a stomach virus has further delayed his training and will prevent him from competing Down Under. Nadal was originally scheduled to make his return from right knee surgery at this week's 2012 Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dahbi, followed by another event in Doha.

The USTA and the Tennis Industry Association (TIA) has announced that tennis participation in 2012 grew four percent over 2011 to top 28 million players for the first time since 2009. The total number of players is the second highest total recorded since the annual survey, conducted by Taylor Research and Consulting, began in 1988.
