More than 60 players of all levels came out to compete in the second leg of the Long Island Tennis Magazine Challenge in Long Beach this past Sunday. Top-level beach tennis was on display in the pro division, while amateur players came out to improve their skills and try out this summer's hottest sport.

On June 11-12, Beach Tennis USA, along with Long Island Tennis Magazine kicked off the first of four Beach Tennis USA tournaments this summer that will be held in Long Beach, N.Y. Although the poor forecast kept some away from the beaches and inside for the weekend, Mother Nature was generous to the many who did make it out and kept the skies clear for two days of fun in the sand.

For the 2010 season, the biggest development for Beach Tennis USA (BTUSA) is the switch from standard tennis racquets to paddles for regulation tournament play. The change was made largely to facilitate the unification of the many international beach tennis associations throughout Europe, South America and Asia.

The 2009 Beach Tennis USA National Championship demonstrated two days of exciting, fast-paced action. For the first time ever, the National Championship in the United States featured a “Paddle Battle,” in addition to the regular racquet competition. The National Championships are held in our backyard, in Long Beach, N.Y., and in addition to the extreme competition, the National Championship also has a beach party feel to it with a stage, food, drinks and music.

When Oceanside, N.Y. resident Nadia Johnston played beach tennis for the first time, she realized she had an opportunity that most professional athletes rarely get—a second chance. The Australian-born Johnston was a rising tennis star in the late 90s, attaining WTA rankings of 314 for singles and 245 for doubles, and competing in the 2001 Australian Open. Throughout her seven-year run as a touring pro, Johnston’s future looked bright, until a wrist injury in the summer of 2001 changed everything.
