Maria Sharapova had a good, but not spectacular, year in 2011 as she failed to win a major. However, the search engine Bing.com says the Russian tennis star, who is currently ranked number four in the world, has been the search engine's "Most-Searched-For Athlete of 2011."

Almost all of my tennis buddies, except for a few "holdouts," are now playing golf. The athleticism and excellent hand-eye coordination they bring to the game enables them to be fairly successful right from the start. Of course, as we golf nuts know, and I represent that remark, success in golf is fleeting. You can 'borrow it but you can never own it.'

American tennis players, such as John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert and Tracy Austin, solidify tennis as part of the American landscape. South Shore golf and tennis country clubs, Inwood, Seawane, Woodmere and Middle Bay, have bustling programs.
