As part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s ongoing “Let’s Move” initiative to fight childhood obesity, tennis Hall of Famer Gigi Fernandez and Valerie Stern, through their new company Baby Goes Pro, have been invited to help coordinate and present the “Explore the Moves Sports and Obstacle Course”, an interactive sports exhibit at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on April 5.

Longines, the official timekeeper and partner of the French Open, has announced the brand’s 2010 U.S. and global tennis program aimed at supporting and developing tennis’ superstars of tomorrow. The brand will host U.S. and International tournaments, offering junior athletes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play at Roland Garros during the French Open with past champions Mary Pierce and Gustavo Kuerten.

I had a match point on my serve at the Tennis and Rockin’ Blues One-On-One Doubles tournament at the National Tennis Center (NTC) way past midnight. Upstairs, the band was playing a Jimi Hendrix song. Players and guests were enjoying a buffet dinner.

On Jan. 29-30, 2010, USTA Eastern used its Annual Meeting as a forum for volunteers to meet and discuss strategies to grow tennis throughout the section. The meeting, called “You Serve 2010,” was held at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in White Plains, N.Y. and attracted more than 130 participants from across New York and New Jersey.

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will be hosting an event sure to electrify the Tennis Industry on Saturday, Jan. 30 to celebrate the finals of the Australian Open. Past Australian greats have been known to Serve-and-Volley their way to many championships over the years.

The USTA Eastern Section and the Long Island Region have again joined forces with the Town of Islip to introduce tennis to the town’s youngsters and others from local Community Tennis Associations (CTA). Joining kids from the Town of Islip’s Summer Tennis Program were those from CTAs Youth Enrichment Services (YES) and the Central Islip CTA.

The following is the acceptance speech from Nancy McShea from the recent USAT/Long Island 19th Annual Awards Dinner, held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Nancy was honored by USTA/Long Island with the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award for dedication and service to the Long Island Tennis community. The award is presented in honor of Hy Zausner, who passed away on 1992 and founded the Port Washington Tennis Academy in 1965, a facility that saw players such as John McEnroe and Vitas Gerulaitis pass through its doors. Long Island Tennis Magazine would like to congratulate Nancy and the rest of the award winners on their accomplishments, recognition and dedication to growing the sport of tennis on Long Island.
