The latest research into the sport of tennis in the U.S. shows that overall tennis participation rose one percent to 17.9 million players, according to the Tennis Industry Association (TIA). The data also show growth in the number of youth tennis players, and indicate more than 14 million Americans, while not tennis players currently, express an interest in playing the sport.

The USTA has announced the three men and three women named to represent the United States at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, July 10-26. World number 63 Lauren Davis, world number 111 Louisa Chirico, and world number 112 Sachia Vickery were named to the women’s tennis team. The men’s tennis team will be comprised of Dennis Novikov, Jean-Yves Aubone and Gonzales Austin.

Italians Sara Errani & Flavia Pennetta beat Americans Serena Williams & Alison Riske 6-0, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon to give Italy a 3-2 victory over the United States in the Fed Cup playoff matchup. The United States actually held a 2-1 advantage heading into the final two matches on Sunday, but dropped the last singles match and the deciding doubles match to fall short.

The United States women will be in Brindisi, Italy this weekend to battle Italy in a Fed Cup World Playoff match. The two are very familiar opponents as this will be the fifth meeting between the two counties in the last seven years. Italy has taken the last four of those matches but the U.S. leads the overall series 9-4.

The USTA has broken ground in Orlando, Fla. on the USTA National Campus, the New Home of American Tennis, in Lake Nona, Fla.  The model tennis facility, expected to be completed in late 2016, will house the USTA’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions.

Andy Murray kicked off the Davis Cup playoff tie between Great Britain and the United States with a 6-1, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 over 47th ranked Donald Young in Glasgow, Scotland. Playing on his home turf of Scotland for the first time since 2011, Murray took it to the American early, eventually closing out the four-setter in less than two hours.
