What is development? A buzzword? A marketing tool? The USTA Player Development's mission is "to develop world-class American players through a clearly-defined training structure and competitive pathway as well as through the implementation of a comprehensive coaching philosophy and structure." In my opinion, development is gradual growth where a student progresses from dependence to independence.

For many players in the north, our tennis is just starting to come out of our indoor hibernation to dealing with all of Mother Nature’s elements outside. This is one of the most frustrating aspects of the game. Indoor tennis is easy compared to the chaos of dealing with lobbing with your overhead in the sun.

I had a problem with one of my students that drove me loco. An otherwise quick 12-year-old boy was confusingly slow on the court. One of the fastest sprinters in our program, he was slow and disorganized with in his movements. I was stumped until a friend of mine hinted I should look at his split-step.

All eyes were on the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon April 28, site of the First Annual New York Tennis Expo. As cars lined the streets and the parking lots filled up, shuttle buses escorted patrons inside the National Tennis Center as droves of people came over from the trains/subway and it looked like the U.S. Open was in town.

Wimbledon has announced a 40 percent increase in prize money for this year's tournament and plans to build a retractable roof over Court #1. The All England Club says total prize money will be $34.4 million, an increase of 6.5 percent or $9.9 million over last year's total prize money.

Rafael Nadal survived his Friday match at the 2013 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. An eight-time defending champion at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, Nadal had only lost six sets at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament since winning the title for the first time in 2005. On Friday, however, he was tested by Dimitrov, as he dictated play for large periods of the second and third sets.

A day after a first-round bye, Boys’ 18s top-seeded player Noah Rubin saw his first action at the 2013 ASICS Easter Bowl and got past future USC Trojan Robbie Bellamy, 6-4, 6-0. Rubin was off for eight weeks after suffering a broken right wrist and had his cast removed just three weeks ago and played for the first time two weeks ago, which was just one week before he played for the first time in Carson, Calif.
