Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopeful Tomas Berdych defeated Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp 6-1, 6-4 in opening round action at the 2012 If Stockholm Open. The second-seeded Czech, who also recorded a straight-sets win over Zopp in the second round of the U.S. Open, broke serve three times en route to win over Zopp.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced the seeds for the London 2012 Olympic Tennis Event, being staged at the All England Club, Wimbledon from July 28-Aug. 5. Seeds are based on the ATP and WTA world rankings as of Monday, July 23.

World number nine-ranked Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina set up a 2012 French Open quarterfinals match against third-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland by finishing off a 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Tomas Berdych on Monday in a match stopped the night before due to darkness after three sets.

Ana Ivanovic has gained a position in the semifinals with a straight set 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marion Bartoli. Ivanovic now goes onto play against Maria Sharapova who needed over three hours to defeat Maria Kirilenko in three sets.

Each November, along with countless other student athletes, the country’s top tennis-playing high school seniors determine their collegiate futures on National Signing Day.

On Saturday April 9, 16 boys, ages 12 and under, took the courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to compete in the Longines Future Tennis Aces event. They were all playing for the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the French Open to meet and play against tennis greats, Andre Agassi and Jim Courier at Roland Garros.

Two-time champion (2005-06) Roger Federer, who is number one in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings for the 275th week (as of Mar. 22), leads an outstanding field which features 16 of the Top 20 players. Federer is the top seed for the sixth time in seven years (except last year).
