Petra Kvitova has been chosen as the Czech Athlete of the Year in a poll conducted by sports journalists. The 21-year-old Wimbledon champion has been honored as the WTA's player of the year for 2011 and won six singles title. She has risen 32 positions from 34th in the rankings to second in the past year.

This past weekend, the United States Davis Cup team had a wide-open opportunity to upend Spain in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Davis Cup, but was unable to do so. Everything was in favor of the U.S. prior to the competition getting underway.

Serena Williams is returning to the WTA Tour at next week’s Generali Ladies Linz after being sidelined since July by a cut on her right foot. Organizers of the event said the Wimbledon and Australian Open champion confirmed her entry Thursday, the same day she lost her number one WTA ranking.

The USTA has announced that the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament will be held Aug. 24-27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the 2010 U.S. Open. The tournament, which offers $1 million in prize money, is free and open to the public with play beginning daily at 11:00 a.m.

This year, Roger Federer has joined some exclusive clubs. After winning the French Open back in May, Federer became only the sixth player to win all four Grand Slam Championships. Then in July, he defeated Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon Finals to win his record 15th Grand Slam title. The win catapulted him ahead of previous record holder Pete Sampras who had 14 Grand Slam titles under his belt. So, does this make Roger Federer the best ever?
