Aragone, Young Move Within One Win of U.S. Open Main Draw

August 23, 2018 | By Brian Coleman

JC Aragone played in his first Grand Slam main draw last year when he won three matches in the qualifying tournament to earn a spot in the U.S. Open. On Thursday, the former University of Virginia standout moved within one victory of a trip back to the main draw, upsetting seventh-seed Italian Thomas Fabbiano 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of qualifying.

On Tuesday, Aragone needed two hours and 22 minutes to beat Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, narrowly advancing with a 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(5) victory. But the 23-year-old made quicker work of his opponent on Thursday.

He secured a late break in the first set thanks to back-to-back double faults from Fabbiano, and then played a dominant second set to move through in just over an hour.

Aragone moves on to play 30th seeded South African Lloyd Harris, who won 6-2, 6-1 over Sebastian Ofner, for a berth in the main draw.

Donald Young shook off a bagel in the first set to upend 29th-seeded Italian Simone Bolelli 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 to book his spot in the final round of qualifying. Young is looking to reach the 14th straight U.S. Open main draw of his career, a streak that dates back to his debut in Flushing Meadows in 2005.

Young moves on to play 12th seeded Canadian Peter Polansky, a 7-6(7), 6-4 winner over Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.
