Nadia Smergut (Ross School) defeated Samantha Elgort (Hills East) 6-4, 7-6(7-2) to win the Singles Championship of the Suffolk County Individual Championships played at Smithtown East High School. Smergut, who was beaten by Elgort in last year's County Semis, avenged that defeat in winning the title. Both Smergut and Elgort will now advance to the State Championship Tournament, which will be played in November in Manilius, N.Y.

Also advancing to the state tournament in singles is another sophomore, Sara Finger of Smithtown East. She finished third and earned the trip upstate when she defeated Karen Serina of East Islip in three tough sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Jamie Hann & Diana Vamvalitis of Westhampton Beach defeated Bridget Harding & Mickey Harding of Northport in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Both teams will head to Manilius for the State Tournament.

While these girls prepare for the state tournament, the Suffolk County's team season is still underway, and over the next week, the Suffolk team title will be determined. The winner will then face off with Syosset High School (2010 Nassau County Champion) in the Long Island Championship Match which is tentatively slated for Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Smithtown East High School.
