Mike Greenberg of ESPN’s "Mike & Mike in the Morning" show had his wish come true at Monday’s U.S. Open National Playoffs/Mixed-Doubles Sectional Qualifying at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. "I got to play with tennis legend, Chris Evert," said Greenberg. "I requested her because I knew she was a great tennis player and to be honest she was the first woman I ever loved."

Crushes aside, Greenberg and Evert made a formidable team facing one of the draw’s top teams, former University of Virginia player Darrin Cohen & former NCAA Champion at Wake Forest, Bea Bielik.

After dropping the first set 1-6, Greenberg & Evert fought back valiantly in the second set before finally succumbing to the younger duo in straight sets, 6-1,6-4.

"I didn’t realize we’d be facing such tough competition," said Greenberg. "When I signed up, I thought we’d be taking on maybe Ryan Seacrest & Martina Navratilova or something like that, not a former third round U.S. Open player like Bea and a college standout like Darrin."

It’s possible that Seacrest plays tennis, but he probably doesn’t have the serving power of Bielik or the volleying skills of Cohen. Both players utilized their strengths to move onto the quarterfinals of the tournament.

"It was an exciting event," said Bielik who is currently ranked 37th best female player in the world. "I mean Chrissy is obviously one of the greatest players of all-time and Mike is a staple on ESPN. We had no expectations and just went out and played solid tennis. It did get a little close in the end there though."

Down 1-4 in the second set, Greenberg & Evert played some of their best tennis of the match to cut into the lead. They gave all they could getting the score back to 4-5, 30-40 before Bielik ended the match by hitting a service winner to seal the victory.

And what did Evert think of her partner’s game.

"To be honest, he was better than I expected him to be. He had excellent ground strokes and moves around great on the court. He is also a really good competitor. He just needs a little work on his volleying skills." When then asked how long it would take her to get Greenberg ready for this level of competition Evert replied. "Every day!"

Maybe Greenberg’s volleys would have been up to par if ex-tennis great Justin Gimbelstob would have returned his phone calls.

"When this event and my participation was first announced, Justin told me he was going to coach me and get me ready for this match. I called him a few weeks ago to take him up on his offer. I was waiting by the phone but he never got back to me."

With a laugh Greeny said, "So my message to him is … where the hell were you?"

Will he be back to play in this event next year?

"I’ll come back every year and play in this event, provided I get to team with Chris Evert. I had a great experience but I’d like to play a terrible team next year because I want to win. I would like to play much, much worse players next time. It was nice having the experience of playing against good people, don’t get me wrong, but a 72-year-old would be the optimal opponent for me."

For Darrin & Bea, with this memorable experience now behind them, it’s on to the quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against the team of Dennis Druzhinsky & Petra Jurova.
