Serena Williams, Sam Stosur, and Vera Zvonareva all won their round of 16 matches at the Family Circle Cup in straight set victories in Charleston, S.C. Venus Williams also continued her comeback from illness that kept her out a majority of 2011 with a first-round victory and the number 10 seed, Anabel Medina-Garrigues was the highest-ranked loss so far.
Stosur defeated American Jamie Hampton 6-0, 7-5. Stosur is the highest ranked player remaining in the tournament after the withdrawal of Agnieszka Radwanska, winner of last weekend's Sony Ericsson Open.
Zvonareva of Russia flew past Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 and Serena was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Elena Vesnina. Serena is playing for this specific tournament for the first time since she won the title four years ago.
“I forgot I hadn’t played on clay in so long,” said Serena. “I feel like it really suits my game. I don’t have to go crazy and move my feet so much. I pretty much just go for my serve and do the best I can.”
Venus, on the other hand, is making her way back from an autoimmune disease, won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 over Iveta Benesova.
“This is great for me to be in another match and to be in the second round,” said Serena. “It was a good start. For me it’s just about having energy at this point. I try not to worry about tomorrow,” said Serena.
Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium took down Vania King of the U.S. in straight sets as well 6-4, 6-3.
