Long Islanders Cheng and Torres to Battle for Girls State Title

Syosset senior Vivian Cheng and Great Neck South senior Nicholle Torres will battle for the Girls High School State Championship today. This is the second straight season that two players from Nassau County will meet in the state singles title match as last year Hannah Camhi (Syosset) defeated Morgan Hermann (Garden City).

Cheng, who is the tournament’s number two seed, defeated third-seeded Claire Minnoe of Auburn in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals, while Torres, the fourth overall seed, pulled off the upset of the tournament defeating Nassau County Champion and top-seeded Alexa Graham in the semifinals in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

Graham and Minnoe will play today in the consolation match for third place.

Earlier in the tournament, Suffolk County representatives Aimee Manfredo of Shoreham Wading River and Zenat Rashidzada of Half Hollow Hills were defeated in the first round, while Laura Torsiello of Bayport Blue Point was defeated in the second round.

In doubles, the Nassau County squad of Gabby Leon & Veronica Paikin who were seeded third, advanced to the semifinals before falling to Edgemont’s Alexa Goldberg & Tomo Iwasaki 1-6,2-6. Leon & Paikin will play today in the consolation match against the fourth-seeded team of Keishorea Armstorng & Mitali Das of Emma Willard in a match to decide third place. Goldberg & Iwasaki advance and will face the top-seeded team of sisters Cassidy & Jessie Cruz of New Rochelle in the finals.

Two Nassau County teams Lauren Livingston & Emma Brezel of Port Washington and Brittany Burke & Morgan Herrmann of Garden City lost in the quarterfinals, while Suffolk County representatives Sarah Han & Dani Silber of Half Hollow Hills West and Danielle Dunphy & Gillian Neubert of East Hampton lost in the first round and the team of Amanda Luper & Allison Huber of Half Hollow Hills East lost in the second round.
