Sam Querrey, the number 23 seed at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open, defeated Australian Marinko Matosevic 7-6(5), 6-7(7), 7-5 on Tuesday to advance to face world number one Novak Djokovic. With the win and Querrey’s trip to the Round of 16, he will become the top ranked American when the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings are released next week, moving past fellow American John Isner who is currently ranked 15th in the world.

"It means a lot. It’s a great feeling," said Querrey of becoming the top-ranked male in the U.S. "I feel like I have worked hard to earn it. Everyone seems like they’ve got their shot with Andy [Roddick] and Mardy [Fish] and James [Blake] and John [Isner], and so I feel like it’s my turn now."

Querrey was the last player to beat Djokovic, upsetting him in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters in November, having lost the first set 6-0.

"I’m just going to hopefully play well, hopefully be aggressive, hopefully on those break points, deuce points, have some balls go my way," said Querrey. "I’m going to try and just enjoy it out there. I might have to go outside of my comfort zone a little bit and do things I don’t like to do, and hopefully it will pay off for me."
