Two-time Family Circle Cup winner and defending champion Serena Williams begins opening round play today in Charleston, S.C. at the 2013 Family Circle Cup. She will face Camila Giorgi of Italy to start off her Charleston campaign, just a few days shy of capturing her record sixth title in Miami at the Sony Open.

“Hopefully I can rekindle some of that fire I had last year,” Serena said. “After the win here, it was a great rest of the year … it’s been a great 12 months, really.”

Serena won Wimbledon, an Olympic Gold Medal and the the U.S. Open to close out 2012. In Charleston a year ago she didn’t drop a set in six convincing matches.

Also in Charleston on Tuesday, the fourth-seeded Sloane Stephens takes on wild card entrant Bethanie Mattek-Sands in an all-American duel.

In other new, Sara Errani of Italy has withdrawn from the event due to a right thigh injury. The world number seven Errani was to make her second appearance in Charleston, but injured herself in Miami during a doubles match at the Sony Open.

"I’m very disappointed to have to withdraw from a great event like Charleston," said Errani. “During my doubles match (n Miami in the second set, we had one long point and I thought the adductor was not feeling right. I like always to play and be 100 percent, but this time it just couldn’t be, so I had to withdraw from the great event in Charleston. It’s a very good tournament, I really wanted to go there very much, but unfortunately this kind of thing sometimes happens and I’m sad about that.”

A native of Italy, Errani, had her breakthrough season in 2012, where she reached the quarterfinals, in singles, and finals, in doubles, at the Australian Open. The same year, she reached the finals of the French Open, in singles, and won its doubles title. She also appeared in the singles semi-finals at the U.S. Open before capturing its doubles win.

“I want to wish everyone in Charleston the best for a great week especially the organizers and sponsors," said Errani. "I wish them great success and hope to come back next year. There will be many other great players there this year, so I think the fans will love the tennis that they will see."
