Looking to play college tennis

Sportime in Kings Park will be hosting tennis scholarship tryouts on Sunday, June 23, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 pm. Full-year and half-year scholarships will be awarded. Participants may qualify to attend the John McEnroe Tennis Academy (JMTA) Tryouts on Sunday, July 21. The event will feature a tennis exhibition between former professional players and current Sportime coaches Robert Kendrick and Bea Bielik. Kendrick, of Sportime Bethpage, is a three-time All-American, reached an ATP world tour high ranking of 69th, and is the co-director of JMTA. Sportime Clubs Regional Manager and Sportime Kings Park General Manager Bielik is an NCAA Champion and reached a career high WTA ranking of 130th in the world.

Proper tennis attire must be worn on the day of the tryouts. Registration will be from 1:00 p.m.-1:30 pm. From 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m., Kendrick and Bielik will be playing in their exhibition, and the kids will also get to test their skills against the Sportime coaches. Court assignments and player assessment by the Sportime and JMTA coaches will take place between 2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. The Selection Committee will contact the scholarship winners by July 4.

About the SPORTIME and JMTA Assessment Committee

The Sportime and JMTA Assessment Committee that will be present at the Sportime Kings Park Tennis Scholarship Tryouts on June 23 is comprised of prestigious tennis professionals and successful coaches.

Robert Kendrick was a three-time All-American at both the University of Washington and at Pepperdine University. Kendrick was ranked as high as #3 in the NCAA collegiate rankings. He was ranked as high as #69 in the world in singles as a professional. Kendrick took Rafael Nadal to 5 sets at Wimbledon in 2006. He also ranked #77 in doubles. Kendrick has been a member of Sportime’s own New York Sportimes World TeamTennis franchise since 2005. He dedicates his energy to assist players of all levels, including both juniors and adults.

Bea Bielik was a three-time All-American at Wake Forest University, 2002 NCAA champion, and reach #1 in NCAA singles collegiate rankings. She advanced to the third round of the US Open in 2002. Bielik was WTT Rookie of the Year in 2003 as a member of NY Sportimes. After retiring from professional tennis, she started as an assistant manager and tennis professional at Sportime, and has since risen to the position of General Manager of Sportime Kings Park, as well as regional manager for the Lynbrook and Massapequa Sportimes.

Lawrence Kleger, 2006 USTA Eastern Section Tennis Professional of the Year, is recognized as a top developmental coach in the United States. He has trained more ranked juniors than anyone in the history of the USTA Eastern Secion. Kleger is the coach of Noah Rubin, a top American junior prospect who has recently achieved a career-best #14 ITF junior world ranking for boys 18 and under. Rubin reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 Junior French Open. Kleger is the Director of Tennis of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy at Sportime Randall’s Island in Manhattan, which also has annexes at Sportime Bethpage and Sportime Lake Isle.

Mike Kossoff is Sportime’s Regioinal Director of Tennis for Long Island, co-director of the JMTA annex at Sportime Bethpage, and the General Manager for Sportime Bethpage Tennis. He is one of the most successful teaching tennis professionals on the east coast. Kossoff worked directly with JMTA Director Lawrence Kleger to transform Sportime Bethpage into a major training facility for juniors.

Jay Harris was the most successful coach in the history of the Brown University Men’s Tennis team. He is now Sportime Regional Manager and a JMTA coach. Harris has a Master’s Degree in Psychology, with a concentration in Sports Psychology. Before Brown University, Harris coached Mike Kossoff at Bowling Green State University. The two are now colleagues working hand in hand at JMTA clay court sessions at Sportime Roslyn.
