Rafael Nadal defeated Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-4 at the Rogers Cup in Montreal Thursday afternoon. Nadal broke Janowicz at 5-6 in the first set and then took the tie-breaker to win the first set. Nadal had the first set on his racquet at 6-5 and led by an early break in the second. Janowicz then grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second set and was threatening to secure a double break, but Nadal fought back, got the set even at 4-4 before breaking again and serving out the match.

Nadal improved his hard court winning streak to 8-0 this year after winning the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. in March. Nadal will face the victor of the match between Benoit Paire and qualifier Marinko Matosevic.

World number seven Juan Martin del Potro knocked off 35th-ranked Ivan Dodig in the second round. Del Potro, who won the Citi Open title Sunday, broke Dodig at love in the final game of the third set, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Del Potro will be playing top Canadian and world number 13-ranked Milos Raonic in his first FedEx ATP Head2Head match.

Raonic defeated Jeremy Chardy of France on Tuesday night, finishing with a 7-5 third set. He then beat Mikhail Youzhny, 6-4, 6-4 in a second round match that lasted just one hour and 13 minutes. Raonic lost only eight points on serve.

World number three David Ferrer lost in his second-round opener to Russian qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-2, 6-4. Bogomolov will next challenge fellow Russian and former world number three Nikolay Davydenko, who defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
