Roger Federer overcame a tough start and emerged the victor over Tommy Haas 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the 2013 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Federer’s win sets up a quarterfinal encounter with fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal on Friday night, the 31st time the two will square off. Nadal leads the series 20-10, including a pair of wins over Federer this season.

Nadal defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to advance, and takes a career-best mark of 50-3 to date in 2013 into the quarterfinals.

”Always playing against Roger is a special feeling,” Nadal said. ”We have a great history behind us in our confrontations. So it’s another quarterfinals. It’s a special one because you’re playing against a very special player.”

Federer, the oldest player left in the Western & Southern Open draw at 32, is playing in his 60th career ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal (46-13 mark) and Nadal is appearing in his 58th (48-9 mark). Federer is 1-5 this season against top 10 opponents, while Nadal is an ATP World Tour-best 13-1.

”Overall, I’m looking at the big picture and just playing matches again,” Federer said. ”I want to make sure I’m moving well and feeling fine. A match like this gives me a lot.”
