Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have never met before at the U. S. Open, but that may change this year if the seeds hold. Federer who is the seventh seed this year is in Nadal’s part the draw and there’s potential for the two to meet in the Quarterfinals. The top half of the draw contains both defending U. S. Open champion Andy Murray and top-seeded Novak Djokovic. They could meet in the semifinals, which would be a rematch of the 2012 final where Murray defeated Djokovic.

In addition to the anticipated Nadal/Federer matchup, today’s draw for the year’s last Grand Slam tournament set up the following possible men’s quarterfinals matchups (should seeding hold): 2011 champion Djokovic vs. 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray vs. Tomas Berdych, and  David Ferrer vs. Richard Gasquet.

With Maria Sharapova out of the tournament due to an injury, the women’s draw is a bit more open.  World number one and top seed Serena Williams could face eighth seed Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals and either Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska or Chinese fifth seed Li Na in the semi-finals. For the other half of the women’s draw, second seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Czech seventh seed Petra Kvitova were drawn into the same quarter of the field with possible opponents in the semi-finals including Italian fourth seed Sara Errani, a 2012 US Open semi-finalist, and Danish sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki.
