The Wheatley girl’s tennis team defeated Oceanside 4-2 on Tuesday in what was the final matchup in Conference B-II play before the playoffs begin. The seventh and final doubles match of the day was called a draw due to darkness. In the first singles match, Ashley Lessin of Wheatley defeated Mara Stewart of Oceanside in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The second singles match saw Kelsey Shields off Wheatley knock off Julietta Eulua in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-3.
“I think I played well,” said Shields. “I thought I was consistent and served well enough to win.”
Both players will be competing in the Nassau County Individual Championships this weekend at Eisenhower Park.
In doubles play, Olivia Gatoff & Sabrina Goldbaum won the first set easily, and then held on against Oceanside's, Jessica Schwarz & Shannon Mullins. The Wheatley duo won in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
“We worked well together today,” said Goldbaum. “I was great at the net and she was great at the baseline.”
The clincher for Wheatley was in third doubles as Dani Joel & Fallon Roher defeated the team of Maggie Poulous & Sara Dauber 6-2, 6-3. This match was very entertaining and was much closer than the score would indicate.
In the fourth doubles match, Jillian Gothelf & Brittney Gickerman of Wheatley and Rebecca Herz & Sami Bloecker of Oceanside went to a third-set tie-breaker before being called due to darkness.
It was a final tuneup for both teams, as both Wheatley and Oceanside each set their sights on the County playoffs which begin Thursday.
