Despite Winterlike Weather, Nassau Boys Kick Off 2014 HS Season

While all of us on Long Island await the warmer weather to arrive, the Boys High School Tennis season got started yesterday in Nassau County amid some cold conditions. 

In Conference I-A, a match between Plainview JFK and Great Neck South came right down to the wire. After Plainview won all three singles matches, Great Neck South took the next three doubles matches. It came down to the seventh match of the day, fourth doubles. Plainview's Brad Wolff & Zach Garfinkel came from behind to win a hard fought third set 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Great Neck South's team of Kyle Bertinski & Bryant Yi, giving Plainview the 4-3 overall victory.

Also in Conference I at Jericho High School, it was Roslyn defeating Jericho 4-3. Sohil Mohan & Kyle Galin defeated Zach Blitz & Michael Wexler 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 at third doubles to seal the victory for Roslyn.

In Conference I-A action at Valley Stream Central, Port Washington defeated Central 6-1. Max Egna & Austin Egna won at third doubles to clinch the match for Port Washington, now 1-0 on the season. 

In Conference I at Great Neck North, it was Great Neck North defeating Manhasset 4-3, as the team of Won Jung & Daniel Cohen defeated Christopher Kokkinos and K. Wang at third doubles 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the deciding match. Great Neck North's record is 1-0 on the young season.

In Conference II, Oceanside High School started their season on a positive note, overcoming the non-spring-like conditions and the loss of two starters due to injury to defeat Wantagh High School, 6-1. The most competitive match was in doubles and featured Michael Wohlgemuth & Nathan Cyrulnik of Oceanside, who came back from losing the first set 5-7 to defeat Mike Impieri & Kenny Mintz of Wantagh  5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in three tough sets. 

Also in Conference II at Lynbrook High School, it was the visiting Massapequa Chiefs who defeated Lynbrook 6-1. The Chiefs were led by senior captains Andrew Bentz and Daniel Kafka in singles.

In Conference III-A action at Carle Place, Carle Place won its home opener against Glen Cove 5-2. Glen Cove won the first singles match as Braddock Chow defeated Giancarlo Cavallero, 6-3 , 6-0, and also won first doubles, as Angad Sadhi & Michael Burrell were victorious over Jack DiFrisco & Anthony Buffolino, 6-1, 6-1. Carle Place took the other five matches, all in straight sets as well. One of the most exciting matches of the day was fourth doubles as Carle Place's Brandon Deveau & Matt Schmidt won the first set easily, 6-1, but Glen Cove's Anthony Guttilla & Francisco Aguilar stormed back in the second set to take a 5-2 lead. The Carle Place team regained their composure and took the deciding set 7-6 in a nail-biting tie-breaker (7-5). In two other close matches, Carle Place's second doubles team of Ryan Tammaro & Andy Li clinched the contest 6-4, 6-3, while third doubles Alec Visslaili & Ali Eftekhari wrapped up with a 7-5 and 7-6 tie-breaker (8-6).

Also in Conference III-A at East Meadow, the visiting Hicksville Comets defeated East Meadow 4-3. In Conference III-B action at Bethpage, the Bethpage Eagles defeated the Farmingdale Dalers 4-3, when Carl O'Brien & Mike Mirman won at first doubles by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

In Conference IV-A at Plainedge, Plainedge shut down Freeport, 7-0.
