Boys High School Roundup: Great Neck South Defeats Host Wheatley

On Friday in Nassau Conference I-A action at Wheatley, Great Neck South defeated host Wheatley 4-3. Great Neck South won third singles, first doubles, and third and fourth doubles to earn their second win in Conference I-A. Great play by David West & Eric Rofe at first doubles helped the duo pull out a three-set victory over Wheatley’s Evan Hirsch & John Zuckerman, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In Conference I at Jericho, host edged the visiting Friends Academy 4-3. In first doubles, it was Jericho’s team of Michael Schumer & Nick Mu defeating Friends’ Andy Moran & Alex Storch 7-6(0), 7-5. Jericho improves to 2-3 on the year and will enjoy some time off until April 23 when the Jayhawks visit Roslyn at 4:30 p.m. With the loss, Friends Academy drops their third consecutive match and looks to return to the win column on April 23 at 4:30 p.m. when they host Locust Valley.

In Conference I-B at Syosset, the host Braves blanked Manhasset 7-0. The Braves improved their overall league record to 5-0, led by Dylan Granat’s comeback win in second singles over Matt Holweger, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Syosset looks to maintain their undefeated season on Saturday morning, April 26 at 10:00 a.m. when the Braves host 4-1 Roslyn. The 2-3 Manhasset team returns to the courts on April 23 at 4:30 p.m. when they host Great Neck North.

In Conference II-A at South Side, the South Side Cyclones defeated Lynbrook 5-2., as the Cyclones got solid doubles play from all four doubles courts and took a 3-1 lead in the overall match. In singles, Brian McNally lost a tough battle filling in at third singles for South Side, but he was picked up by his teammates, as Mark Behar played a crafty match and defeated Brian Kessler of Lynbrook 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. On Court 1, David Reinharz bested Jake Sandler 6-3, 6-3 to close out the 5-2 win for the Cyclones. South Side is now 5-1 heading into the spring break intermission, and is scheduled to return to action on April 23 at 4:30 p.m. when they visit Herricks.

In Conference IV-A at Plainedge, it was the undefeated Plainedge team earning their fifth win of the season over the Clarke Rams, 6-1. In second singles, Plainedge’s John Jenco beat Sam Blumental 6-1, 6-3, and in third singles, it was Plainedge’s Tommy Marigliano defeating Steven Cano 6-3, 6-3 to seal the victory. Plainedge returns to action April 23 at 4:30 p.m. when they look to extend their unbeaten start to the year at Freeport, while the 1-2 Clarke Rams visit Lawrence at 4:45 p.m. on that same day seeking their second win of the season.

In Conference III-A at Mepham, the host Mepham Pirates defeated the Hicksville Comets 6-1, led by Charlie Eichmann & Gregg Talma defeating Russel Kamal & Jordan Diaz 5-7, 6-4, 7-4 in third doubles to lead the Pirates. In Conference III-B at Calhoun, it was host Calhoun defeating Valley Stream South 5-2, as Calhoun’s Jon Kessler and Ian Wolin won in third doubles, 6-3, 6-2.
