Six LI Area Juniors to Be Honored on Opening Day of U.S. Open

USTA Eastern will hold the 2014 Junior Awards Gala on Monday, Aug. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Indoor Hospitality Pavilion to recognize the top juniors in the Eastern Section. Hailey Stoerback of Saint James, N.Y. is the third place finisher in the Girls 10s Division, Billy Suarez of Huntington, N.Y. is the top finisher in the Boys 12s, Lea Ma of Dix Hills, N.Y. is the second place finisher in the Girls 14s, Brenden Volk of Dix Hills, N.Y. is the second finisher in the Boys 16s, Sabrina Xiong of Fresh Meadows, N.Y. is the third place finisher in Girls 16s and the second place finisher in Girls 18s Division, and Daniel Grunberger of Great Neck, N.Y. is the top finisher in Boys 18s Division.

Each of the 30 players honored are the top three in their age group as a result of their tournament performances throughout the past 12 months.

“The Awards Gala provides players with the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work at a young age,” said Julie Bliss Beal, senior director of competitive tennis. “Parents and kids alike find it meaningful to celebrate the players’ achievements during Day One at the U.S. Open.”

Former professional tennis player and first vice president of the USTA, Katrina Adams will be a guest speaker. Adams is the executive director of the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program in New York City and is currently a member of the USTA Eastern Section. Former professional tennis player and Tennis Channel Broadcaster Justin Gimelstob will also be a guest speaker. Gimelstob is a member of the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.
