It was a battle of two of Nassau County’s top girls tennis teams on Friday afternoon as the Jericho Jayhawks faced off against the Syosset Braves at Syosset High School. The Jayhawks looked impressive in defeating the Braves 4-3.

Jericho's victory was balanced between singles and doubles as they got two of their victories in the singles matches and two in doubles to help them go to 4-2 in conference play. First singles player, Shanice Arthur, defeated Syosset’s Katie Cirella 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the battle of two senior captains.

“I lost to her in our two previous matches and knew it would come down to who was the more consistent player,” said Arthur of her win over Cirella. “In the third set, I had her 5-2, but she won two straight games. I told myself not to sweat it and just try to breathe, relax and stay focused which I was able to do.”

Jiya Singh defeated Tal Bodner 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in third singles for Jericho's second singles win. The Braves got their victories in second singles, as Risha Malhotra beat Jericho’s Rachel Hirschheimer in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

First doubles was a win for Jericho, as Sydney Adler & Lauren Gold defeated Lauren White & Gabi Sklar 6-3, 6-4. After the win, Gold said, "Our opponents played well. Syosset is always a tough match. We played well as a team though and are happy we came through with a win."

Also in doubles play, Perri Sheftel & Fallon Berger were victorious against Mallie Feldman & Joanna Baranowski 6-1, 6-4 for Jericho, while Syosset got a win in fourth doubles when Leah Cullen & Rachael Settle defeated Erica Forrest & Rachel Li.

Jericho is now 4-2 on the year and will host Port Washington in their next match today at 4:30 p.m. Syosset is now 3-3 in conference play, and travel to Locust Valley Monday for a 4:15 p.m. match.
