Juan Martin del Potro plans to make a comeback in 2015, and he will start by participating in the seventh annual Brisbane International presented by Suncorp. The tournament begins on Jan. 4, and will mark the first time the Argentine has played since Dubai back in late February.
The last time del Potro participated in a competitive match was against Somdev Devyarman at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He was forced to retire with a left wrist injury and went on to have surgery in late March.
The 2009 U.S. Open champion is just one of many former Grand Slam champions in the Brisbane field in January. Roger Federer, Marin Cilic and Lleyton Hewitt will all be in the early January tournament, along with up and coming stars Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov.
Hewitt won last year’s tournament 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 over Federer. It was the Australian’s first title since the 2010 Gerry Weber Open.
The women’s field is also star-studded, with Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic headlining the women’s draw, much to the delight of Tournament Director Cameron Pearson:
“To have eight Grand Slam champions, five of the world’s top 11 men—as well as Juan Martin del Potro with an injury protected ranking of seventh—and four of the top 10 women commit to Brisbane is a fantastic result and certainly highlights the players’ regard for the tournament.”
