The Stony Brook Women’s Tennis team defeated St. John’s 5-2 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday, as the Seawolves received straight-set victories from some New York locals, with sophomore Nadia Smergut of New York City and freshman Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Brooklyn, each winning their respective singles matches.

Smergut rolled past Zofia Stainsz of St. John’s 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles while Tsvetkov cruised past Irina Preotescu 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles.

In all, Stony Brook won five of the six singles matches, getting victories from Polina Movchan, Kristina Vozniak and Louise Badoche as well. The excellent singles play from Stony Brook made up for the loss of the doubles point as the Red Storm won two of three doubles contests.

The victory moves Stony Brook to 7-1 on the season as it enters a two week hiatus. The Seawolves will next play on March 28th at home versus the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Red Storm fall to 7-5 on the season and will host Iowa State on Monday, March 16.
