This past weekend, the best boys high school players in Nassau County came together at Oceanside High School for the Individual Championships. They were battling for County supremacy, as well as a trip to the State Championships (beginning June 3). The weather cooperated this past weekend, allowing for some great tennis, both in singles and doubles matches.

In singles play, the final was a grueling three-set encounter between Garden City Junior Zach Morris and Cold Spring Harbor’s Josh Levine (Sophomore). Levine took the first set handily 6-2, but Morris fought back to grab the second 7-5. This set the stage for a deciding set, one that would determine the County Champion. The final set went back and forth, with Morris grabbing a 5-4 lead late in the set. That is when things got even tougher for Levine whose hands and quadriceps started to cramp up. The injury combined with Morris’s fine play ended up being too much for Levine to overcome and Morris won the decisive third set 7-5 to win the County Title.

Morris and Levine will both advance to the State Tournament, where they will be joined by Levine’s Cold Spring Harbor teammate, Eric Ambrosio (Junior). Ambrosio defeated Jericho’s Sam Lam (Senior) 6-2, 6-4 in the Consolation Match. While Lam will not join the other three at the state tournament he does join them in being named All-State players for this season.

In doubles, it was Long Beach’s Matt Barry (Sophomore) & Eric Rubin (Sophomore) who came out on top. Barry and Rubin defeated Jon DeFrancesh & Andrew Yaraghi of Friends Academy 6-3, 7-5 in the final. Both teams will advance to the state tournament and they will be joined by Farmingdale’s Ignacio Casali & Brendan Henry. Casali & Henry earned their trip to States with a 7-6(8-6), 6-1 straight set win over Cold Spring Harbor’s Jensen Reiter & Alex Tropiano in the consolation match. All four of the doubles teams who advanced to the semifinals were named all State teams for the season.
